- With this recording Haiou Zhang, celebrates Liszt year in masterly and inclusive style. The B minor Sonata is at the heart of his programme and here, in music once considered technically unplayable and musically incomprehensible, he recreates a visionary masterpiece and a landmark in the history of music with exceptional grandeur and lucidity. Haiou Zhang is a most serious artist.
- Der Chinese Haiou Zhang ist, was Technik anbelangt, ein echter Virtuose, und dazu noch ein hundertprozentiger Musiker, der nicht auf Showmacht, sondern Emotionalität mit Intellektualität verbindet. Er ist charismatisch, doch er drängt sich nicht auf, er nimmt uns mit auf eine anspruchsvolle Musikreise, der er einen durchaus persönlichem Touch gibt, während der er uns stets wach und aufmerksam hält und uns die Möglichkeit lässt, uns mit seinem intensiven Spiel auseinander zu setzen. Seine Liszt-Interpretationen sind kraftvoll, haben eine riesige dynamische Bandbreite und eine reiche Farbpalette. Sie zeugen durchgehend von großer musikalischer Sensibilität und sind, so gesehen, eine willkommene Hommage an Liszt in seinem Jubiläumsjahr.
- He gives a thoroughly noble performance without any excesses. Funerailles from Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses, given an appropriately powerful and dramatic performance. Both St Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds and those majestic Fountains at the Villa d’Este are so marvelously depicted in Liszt’s music. Zhang has great musicality and the technique to back it up and bring these sound pictures to life. [...] Haiou Zhang gives a true bang-up performance that I’m sure both Liszt and Horowitz would smile at.
