- NGC 4942 ist eine 13,0 mag helle Balkenspiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ „SBcd“ im Sternbild der Jungfrau und etwa 27,6 Millionen Parsec von der Erde entfernt. Sie wurde zweimal entdeckt; zuerst am 23. März 1789 von Wilhelm Herschel mit einem 18,7-Zoll-Spiegelteleskop entdeckt, der sie dabei mit „vF, S“ beschrieb (Beobachtung geführt als NGC 4942); danach im Juli 1899 von DeLisle Stewart (geführt als IC 4136).
