Danach entwickelte sich ein friedliches Zusammenleben zwischen den Yues und den Han während der Trieu-Dynastie. 111 v. Chr. kam die Dynastie unter die Kontrolle der Han-Chinesen als Provinz der Han-Dynastie und blieben dies, jeweils durch kurze Zeiträume von Unabhängigkeit unterbrochen, bis 938 n. Chr. , als sie in Folge der Schlacht am Bạch Đằng-Fluss die Unabhängigkeit errangen. Danach erfolgte eine Blütezeit in Kultur, Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik. In dieser Zeit expandierte Vietnam auch in den Süden. 1880 kam Süd-Vietnam als Teil von Französisch-Indochina unter französische Kolonialherrschaft, während der Norden noch vom Kaiser regiert wurde. 1945 wurde es in das kommunistische Nordvietnam und das von den Westmächten unterstützte Südvietnam geteilt. Nach dem Vietnamkrieg kam es 1976 zur Wiedervereinigung und Saigon wurde nach dem verstorbenen Staatschef Nordvietnams in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt umbenannt.
