Das heutige Russland entwickelte sich aus dem Großfürstentum Moskau, einem Teilfürstentum des früheren ostslawischen Reiches Kiewer Rus, zu einem über ein Hundert indigene Ethnien zählenden Vielvölkerstaat und Weltreich, wobei ethnische Russen mit heute ca. 81 % der Bevölkerung traditionell den tragenden Teil des Staatsvolkes ausmachen. Seine geographische Brückenlage zwischen Europa und Asien wirkte sich fundamental auf die Entwicklung Russlands aus und wurde zu einem zentralen Thema in der Diskussion um das nationale Selbstverständnis. Die Russische Föderation ist „Fortsetzerstaat“ der Sowjetunion in internationalen Organisationen, Atommacht und ständiges Mitglied des Weltsicherheitsrates. Nach der partiellen Erholung von der postkommunistischen Transformationskrise der 1990er Jahre gilt Russland heute als sechstgrößte Volkswirtschaft der Welt nach Kaufkraftparität sowie wegen seines Reichstums an natürlichen Ressourcen als wichtige Industrienation und wurde deshalb als Mitglied in die wirtschaftspolitische G8 aufgenommen.
